In 1974, 22-year-old Randall Lanning was a missile launch control officer in rural Missouri. Every week he traveled deep underground where he worked overnight alongside a commander. There, in a small room, he manned the launch controls that could deploy nuclear weapons in the event of a Soviet attack. He recalls one night that’s still etched in his memory.

Content Warning: Story mentions gun violence and suicide.

In 2018, a gunman attacked the Pittsburgh synagogue. Eleven people were killed, and at least six others were wounded.

Dan Leger, a nurse and hospital chaplain, was shot while rushing to help others. Tim Matson, a SWAT officer who responded to the attack, was shot seven times. Dan and Tim met in the hospital afterwards.

At StoryCorps, they talked about how building a friendship became part of their recovery: https://storycorps.org/stories/pittsburgh-synagogue-survivors/
